In this Hub I am going to explain my 2 years experience of Costochondritis. I have been suffering from chest wall pain/ Rib pain for almost 2 years. Costochondritis is the inflammation of ribs along with the sternum. The severe form of this condition is known as Titez syndrome.

Costochondritis is one of the common cause of Chest pain. Often the condition can cause similar pain like heart attack or pain similar to other pulmonary problems. This is why it is very important to diagnose the actual condition first. Make sure the pain is not due to other serious problems like pneumonia, pericarditis, pulmonary embolism, Lung infections, Tuberculosis etc. The easiest way to diagnose costochondritis is to take out other possible serious causes.

Costochondritis is not life threatening and with proper care the pain can be cured over time.

My experience of Costochondritis: At the age of 19 years, after graduating from high school I was trying to take admission in a College. During the period suddenly I felt a different kind of pain in chest. I got really worried and went home. I had a little bit difficulty in taking breath for a while. After taking rest at Home the pain reduced. But after this incident I always felt the pain while lifting any heavy object or doing physical exercise. A sharp pain was always there if I put pressure on my Rib cage. Different sleeping positions also made the pain worse.

I took an appointment with a Doctor to diagnose the condition. The doctor did several Test but did not find any serious issue. He told me everything is fine and not to worry for this pain. Then I assumed that it was costochondiritis. He prescribed some anti-inflammatory medicine to get rid of the pain. I felt much better when doctor told me that the pain is not due to any serious condition.

However the pain did not go away permanently.

Later I realized that, anxiety and pressure was making the pain worse. I changed my lifestyle which helped me to stay away from anxiety. Take lots of rest and did not do any kind of heavy work. This really helped me to get rid of the pain permanently. I am really glad that I overcame this problem.

What can you do to get rid of costochondritis :

NSAID anti-inflammatory drugs are recommended to control the problem. "Naprosyn" is NSAID anti-inflmmatory drugs which can reduce the pain. Staying away from any kind of anxiety and taking plenty of rest is the best solution. Do not lift anything heavy. Gradually the condition will improve and soon you can get rid of the problem permanently.

I hope this Hub will help all the people who are suffering from costochondritis. Do not forget to comment or rate this hub.

I've had this for over 2 years. How do you get rid of it other than rest and NSAIDS, I have been doing that.

Healthy lifestyle is the Key. NSAID can't cure this problem. You would need a healthy diet and stress free life. Do not try to left anything heavy . Just take rest and follow a healthy diet for 1-2 months. The pain will go away gradually. Make sure you don't have any other problems. I know for some people it does not go away completely.

Hi have you found any relief for this since your post. I find stress or lifting anything brings mine on. My latest flare up has been since November. I just wish it would go away.

Hello Tanvir,

You were one of the lucky ones. This condition can go on and on and on... in a particularly nasty form it affects the joint between the collarbone and the breastbone. Then it affects the nerves and artery running down the arm so, over and above the chest pain, one gets arm pain.

That pain with breathing is very significant. It means that either the muscles, or one of the joints associated with breathing has been affected, usually the rib-spine joint.

The condition is much more common after breast surgery. But anyone can get it, males too.

Tietzes syndrome responds very well to highly specific chiropractic treatment. Heavy manipulation of the spine, from the back is to be avoided, in fact it aggravates and even causes the condition.
